Founded in 2021, San Francisco-based Anthropic was created by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei along with several former OpenAI researchers, including Jared Kaplan, Jack Clark, Sam McCandlish, Tom Brown, Ben Mann and Chris Olah.
OpenAI Researchers Built Anthropic In 2021 Many of them had played key roles in developing large language models at OpenAI before departing over concerns related to the company’s direction, governance and approach to AI safety. CEO Dario Amodei Once Led Key Initiatives At OpenAI Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s chief executive officer, previously served as OpenAI’s vice president of research and was regarded as one of the leading minds behind the company’s AI systems. Daniela Amodei, now Anthropic’s president, also held senior operational roles at OpenAI. The founders positioned Anthropic as an AI company focused heavily on safety, transparency and long-term risks associated with advanced AI systems. Their flagship chatbot Claude has since emerged as one of the strongest competitors to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, driving rapid growth in enterprise adoption and revenue.
Anthropic said on Thursday that its annualized revenue has surged to $47 billion, fueled by businesses using Claude for coding, automation and workplace tasks. The latest funding round was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer Investment Group, Greenoaks Capital and Sequoia Capital. Anthropic’s meteoric rise has intensified the rivalry among elite AI firms founded or backed by former Silicon Valley insiders. Alongside OpenAI and Elon Musk’s Space linked AI ventures, Anthropic is now widely expected to pursue a blockbuster public listing in the coming years.
