The Union Cabinet is likely to clear a Rs 25,000 crore mega road infrastructure plan for Varanasi today. The central government is set to approve the Ganga and Varuna elevated corridor projects to decongest the city and boost pilgrim movement. The Ganga elevated corridor, a si lane, 46-kilometre highway, will connect Highway 19 with the Varanasi ring road, reducing travel time from 60 minutes to 20 minutes.
The Varuna corridor will be a 43-kilometre elevated link connecting Highway 31 with the ring road at an estimated cost of Rs 11,000 crore. These projects aim to manage traffic for the 15 crore tourists and pilgrims visiting the Prime Minister's constituency annually.
