(PTI Image for Representation) The scale and spread of incidents recorded between January and July 2026 indicate that tensions between the Naga and Kuki communities have evolved into a significant law-and-order challenge in Manipur. During over a si month period, police registered around 85 FIRs, carried out more than 214 raids, made over 75 apprehensions and at least 19 arrests, while 24 people were killed and at least 47 others were injured. The data compiled by Manipur administration and accessed by News18 reveals that security agencies have also identified five major areas under tension, suggesting that the violence is no longer confined to isolated incidents. As per the data, the chronology of incidents points to a clear pattern. January remained peaceful, with no casualties reported. The first incident was recorded in February with one injury in Ukhrul. Violence escalated sharply in March and continued through April, before reaching its highest intensity in May and June when fatalities and injuries were reported from multiple districts simultaneously. Although July recorded only one injury, the cumulative figures show that the conflict had spread across several hill districts over the preceding months.
Top officials handling the situation said in various cases, there were isolated incidents not linked to community clashes, but persons were from these two communities. The concentration of police action further reflects the seriousness of the situation. Of the 85 FIRs, nearly four-fifths were registered in just two districts, while security forces conducted more than 214 raids as part of operations to contain the violence. The emergence of multiple tension zones along key roads and district boundaries also indicates that the security challenge extends beyond individual villages to strategically important corridors. Ukhrul And Kangpokpi Emerge As Principal Hotspots The data identify Ukhrul as the first and most consistently affected district. Incidents were reported from February through May, with repeated deaths and injuries. The district also witnessed the largest police response, accounting for 46 FIRs, more than 150 raids, over 42 apprehensions, and more than 13 arrests. Kangpokpi emerged as the second major hotspot. Violence was reported from March and continued until July, with fatalities and injuries recorded during March, April, May, June and July. Police registered 23 FIRs, conducted more than 35 raids, made over 33 apprehensions, and carried out more than six arrests in the district. Together, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi accounted for 69 of the 85 FIRs, highlighting their centrality to the conflict. Violence Spread To Adjoining Districts From May onwards, incidents expanded beyond the two principal hotspots. Authorities recorded one death and two injuries in May, followed by another injury in June.
