The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has called for a one-day mass hunger strike tomorrow in solidarity with climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite fast for 18 days alongside those protesting over the NEET paper leak. "Tomorrow, July 16th, join us for 1-day mass hunger strike in solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk and the students of this country," the party said in a post on X. Read Full Story The CJP has been staging a sit-in at Delhi's Jantar Mantar for the past 25 days, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the irregularities in the NEET exam.
Wangchuk joined the agitation on June 28 and has remained on an indefinite hunger strike since then. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said Wangchuk's health had deteriorated sharply after more than two weeks without food. "Wangchuk has been losing muscle mass and is in immense pain," Dipke said, adding that the activist has lost 8.5 kg since beginning his fast. Wangchuk's prolonged fast has drawn appeals from across the political spectrum and civil society. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Jairam Ramesh, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, and several opposition lawmakers have urged him to call off the hunger strike while pressing the Centre to engage with the protesters.
Actor Omi Vaidya of '3 Idiots' fame, along with other celebrities and academics, have also expressed concern over his health and appealed for a resolution through dialogue. Despite the appeals, Wangchuk has maintained that he will continue the fast until the government agrees to hold talks with the protesters. Meanwhile, the CJP has stepped up preparations for its proposed 'Chalo Sansad' march on July 20, the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The party has urged supporters to register for the march through its missed-call campaign.
Party spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said more than 130,000 people have registered their support for the proposed Parliament march through the campaign. Ends With PTI inputs
