A large portion of gangster Rohit Godara’s ancestral house in Bikaner’s Loonkaransar town was demolished overnight by unidentified people, police said on Wednesday. The demolition took place when no family members were present at the farmhouse, which is located in the fields. According to police, a significant part of the structure has been brought down using an earthmover. Authorities are examining CCTV footage and collecting other evidence to identify those behind the action. While several vehicles, including a JCB machine, were reportedly seen reaching the house late Tuesday night, police denied any involvement in the demolition.
Loonkaransar Circle Officer Ranveer Singh said police received information about the incident on Tuesday morning, following which the local station house officer inspected the spot. He added that nearby residents claimed they were unaware of the demolition as houses in the area are located at a distance from each other. Some residents also said the sound of the machinery may have gone unnoticed due to air coolers running in nearby homes. The farmhouse was earlier occupied by Godara’s father Sant Das, mother Gita, brother Hanuman Swami, and Hanuman’s wife and children. However, none of them were residing there at the time of the demolition.
Police said Godara’s parents and brother are currently in judicial custody in separate extortion cases. Hanuman Swami was arrested in an extortion case registered in Sri Ganganagar, while his parents are accused in another case filed in Ratangarh, Churu. Rohit Godara, who is wanted in several criminal cases, remains absconding and is believed to be in Azerbaijan, police said. Officials said Hanuman Swami’s wife had left the house with her children around 10-12 days ago and had requested neighbours to look after the family’s crops. Singh said no formal complaint has been received so far, and further action will be taken after a report is filed.
Godara’s name recently surfaced in connection with “Operation Hardball”, a joint crackdown by law enforcement agencies in the US, Canada and Europe against Indian organised crime networks. According to the US Department of Justice, the operation led to the arrest of 24 people linked to multiple crimes. Police have identified Godara as a key figure in gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s network in Europe. Ends With inputs from PTI
