A woman accused of pretending to be an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer to marry a man and later demanding Rs 40 lakh from him has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, police said on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Sadhana, was arrested on Monday and sent to jail. The case was registered on the complaint of her husband Abhishek, who alleged that she and her family deceived him by portraying her as an IAS officer using fake photographs and videos on social media.
Read Full Story In his complaint, Abhishek alleged that he married Sadhana believing she was an IAS officer. However, he claimed that her behaviour changed after marriage and she allegedly attempted to strangle him, threatened him and his family, and demanded Rs 40 lakh. Police said Sadhana was arrested following a search operation. During interrogation, she allegedly admitted to uploading fake pictures and videos on Facebook portraying herself as an IAS officer to gain the trust of Abhishek and his family.
Superintendent of Police (South) Anshika Verma said an FIR was lodged at Faridpur police station against Sadhana, her father Narendra Pal Singh, brother Surya Pratap and maternal uncle Rajendra Singh, all residents of Budaun district. According to police, she confessed to demanding Rs 40 lakh from her husband and asking him to sell his agricultural land to finance the construction of a hospital on a plot owned by her in Budaun. Police said Sadhana told investigators that she is a BSc graduate preparing for government examinations and that her father is a farmer.
She also allegedly admitted to assaulting her husband during a domestic dispute, officials said. The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 66D of the Information Technology Act. The investigation is underway to ascertain the role of the other accused named in the FIR, police said. Ends
