In a post that quickly went viral on social media, Macron praised the French players for their commitment and expressed optimism about the future of France side despite the painful defeat. “Bravo to Spain for this qualification. Thank you to the Bleus for carrying our colors with commitment. Tonight’s defeat is hard to take, but this team is young and full of promise," Macron wrote on X. Bravo à l’Espagne pour cette qualification.
However, Les Bleus failed to live up to expectations against a disciplined Spanish side. Spain took the lead in the 22nd minute after Lucas Digne fouled Lamine Yamal inside the penalty area. Mikel Oyarzabal converted the resulting penalty to score his fifth goal of the tournament and put La Roja ahead. Despite boasting attacking stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise, France struggled to break down Spain’s resolute defence. French hopes of a comeback suffered another blow in the 58th minute when Pedro Porro doubled Spain’s advantage. Historically, only two teams had previously managed to win a FIFA World Cup match after trailing at half-time, and France were unable to become the third. Spain comfortably protected their lead in the remaining stages of the match to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup final for only the second time in their history.
The 2010 champions will now face the winner of the second semifinal between England and Argentina in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19 (July 20 IST). England are aiming to reach their first World Cup final since winning the tournament in 1966, while Argentina enter the semifinal as defending champions. Argentina have won all six of their matches in the ongoing edition, whereas the Three Lions have recorded five wins and one draw en route to the last four.
