(Representational image) Karnataka Minister for Bengaluru Development K Krishna Byre Gowda has announced a city-wide “Freedom from Waste" campaign to clear garbage, debris, and mud heaps littering roadsides and vacant sites. The month-long drive will begin on August 1 as part of the Independence Month celebrations, with the aim of improving the city’s cleanliness and overall appearance.
The minister said thousands of tonnes of debris, mud, and waste have accumulated along roadsides, damaging Bengaluru’s aesthetics. He noted that several construction sites, including Metro and K-RIDE project locations, have large mud heaps that also need to be cleared. The campaign will be carried out in coordination with multiple government departments. The government has also appealed to property owners and the public to ensure that vacant sites are cleaned before August 15, as unmaintained plots often become dumping grounds for garbage. Krishna Byre Gowda warned that if owners fail to clean their vacant sites by the deadline, the government will undertake the cleanup after August 15. The cost incurred will be recovered by adding it to the property’s tax bill, he said.
