Folarin Balogun Breaks Silence On Red-Card Reversal After USA's FIFA World Cup Exit Published By, Last Updated: July 14, 2026, 23:11 IST Balogun admitted FIFA's controversial decision to overturn his World Cup suspension created "outside noise" inside the USA camp before their last-16 defeat to Belgium. Rapid Read (Credit: AP) Folarin Balogun has admitted FIFA’s controversial decision to overturn his World Cup suspension created unwanted distractions inside the United States camp, saying he knew the unprecedented ruling would spark debate ahead of their last-16 clash with Belgium. The Monaco striker was shown a straight red card during the USA’s Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina and was initially set to serve a one-match suspension. However, on the eve of the knockout clash against Belgium, FIFA’s disciplinary committee suspended the ban for a year, making Balogun eligible to play. The decision immediately became one of the biggest talking points of the tournament, especially after US President Donald Trump revealed he had personally contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding the case. FIFA has repeatedly insisted the ruling was made independently and was not influenced by political intervention.
Despite the eligibility boost, the USA crashed out of the tournament with a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium. Speaking on CBS Mornings, Balogun acknowledged the unusual circumstances surrounding the decision and the impact it had on the squad. But when I started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy," Balogun said. The 25-year-old admitted the uncertainty affected the atmosphere in the camp, even though the players remained focused on the task ahead. “I could almost see within my team-mates a bit of nerves because it’s something that is so unique. But the closer we got to the game, I tried to just focus as best as I could, but it was difficult — a lot of outside noise and that’s hard to avoid." Balogun revealed the sudden reversal came after preparations had already been made without him in the starting plans.
“It was confusing because the team was practicing without me in the team. I’m almost just playing a supporting role to keep morale high." The former Arsenal forward said he only learned he would be available while travelling with the squad, forcing an unexpected change of plans. Even so, Balogun insisted the controversy was not an excuse for the disappointing defeat. “It’s more about being able to separate the emotion from the job at hand. We’re all professionals," he said. “You saw it was definitely a difficult game against Belgium and that can overshadow whether we were focused or not. But from me being inside the camp, I know we had full concentration going into the game."
