The latest death was reported from the Chariduar revenue circle in Sonitpur district, where a man who had gone missing on Monday night was found dead the following day, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
A total of 37,032 people have been affected by the floods, with Lakhimpur emerging as the worst-hit district where 35,696 people have borne the brunt of the deluge. Just a day earlier, the flood-affected population stood at a little over 9,600. Earlier, one person died in Charaideo district and two others lost their lives in Dhemaji. The latest ASDMA bulletin, cited by PTI, said floodwaters have inundated six districts โ Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat and Sivasagar โ affecting 12 revenue circles and 99 villages. The state government is distributing relief materials through 20 relief distribution centres, while the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued 16 people from Sonitpur during the past 24 hours. Floodwaters have also submerged 1,103.94 hectares of cropland.
Two animals were washed away, while another 16,139 animals, including poultry, have been affected, the ASDMA said. The bulletin also reported damage to roads and other public infrastructure in several flood-hit districts.
