Citizens Specialty Hospital in Hyderabad successfully treated a 41-year-old woman with a rare and potentially life-threatening complication caused by a giant uterine fibroid. The patient from Bhubaneswar was admitted with severe abdominal pain and was found to be severely anaemic.
Imaging revealed a 19-cm fibroid and uterine torsion, an uncommon condition in which the uterus twists on its supporting structures. Surgeons performed an emergency hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and appendectomy. The procedure was complicated by internal bleeding and distorted anatomy.
The patient received three units of packed red blood cells and recovered well before being discharged in stable condition. The surgery was performed by Jyoti
Kankanala, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist of Citizens Specialty Hospital, along with the supporting surgical team of Pratap Varma, Vani and anaesthetist Madhukar Goud.
