The conflict in West Asia has intensified as the United States restores a shipping blockade on Iran and targets its air defence batteries. In response, Iran has launched missiles and drones towards Bahrain and Jordan, while also targeting commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. During an attack on two Emirati oil tankers, one Indian sailor was killed and six other Indian nationals were injured.
India has condemned the attack and lodged a protest with Iran, calling for the safety of its citizens and commercial shipping. Meanwhile, both sides are attempting to assert control over the waterway. The Iranian parliament has proposed a service charge of up to two million dollars per transiting vessel, while the United States has proposed a twenty percent toll on cargo and deployed unmanned sea drones for surveillance.
The Brazilian President has criticised the United States, comparing its actions in the region to piracy.
