Sathish Jarkiholi, Minister for Public Works, on Tuesday, inspected the road safety works at Hulikal Ghat (State Highway 52) in Hosanagara taluk and instructed the officials to complete the works quickly without compromising on quality. The Public Works Department has taken up the road safety works and the construction of the retaining wall in the ghat by spending about ₹5.35 crore. During the repair works, three construction workers died due to a landslip on April 9 this year.
The incident delayed the repair work on the ghat. The movement of heavy vehicles had been prohibited on the stretch. The Minister sought a detailed report from officials on precautionary measures being taken to prevent landslips in the ghat area and to ensure the safety of motorists during the monsoon. Inspecting the work site closely, he told engineers and contractors present that since ghat roads were highly sensitive stretches, there should be no compromise on quality in the construction of the retaining wall under any circumstances.
He said the works should be completed within the stipulated period without causing inconvenience to the public or to vehicular traffic during the monsoon. He added that appropriate warning boards and reflective markers for night-time visibility should be installed at work sites as safety measures. “Traffic safety in ghat sections is of utmost importance to us. Officials of the department must work in coordination to ensure the public faces no difficulties during the monsoon, and there should be no compromise whatsoever on the quality of the work,” Mr. Jarkiholi said.
Senior officers of the department were present.
