The Mysuru District Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has condemned the forcible eviction of street vendors in Mysuru without prior notice and alternative arrangements. In a statement here on Tuesday, CPI (M) Mysuru district Secretary Jagadish Surya said the street vendors, who are earning their livelihood in various parts of Mysuru City, are an integral part of the city’s economy. “Besides providing essential goods and services to the public at affordable prices, they earn an honest livelihood to support their families.
Their sudden eviction will push thousands of poor and working-class families into distress,” he said. Under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, it is the duty of the government and local bodies to protect the rights of street vendors. “Before undertaking any eviction drive, it is mandatory to conduct a comprehensive survey, issue certificates of vending to eligible vendors, ensure the effective functioning of the Town Vending Committee, identify designated vending zones and provide opportunities in accordance with the law,” he said.
Therefore, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) and the district administration should immediately halt the forcible eviction of street vendors. He called upon the authorities to hold consultations with street vendors, identify suitable vending zones and implement the 2014 Act in letter and spirit. “It is unjust to deprive the poor of their livelihoods in the name of urban development. It is possible to build a clean, orderly and beautiful city while also protecting the livelihoods and human dignity of street vendors,” he said.
Jagadish Surya has appealed to the State government, MCC, Mysuru district administration, elected representatives, civil society organisations and the public to come forward to protect the legitimate rights of street vendors.
