Noted neurologist and director of Ankineedu Advanced Stroke Centre at Lalitha PVS Institute of Medical Sciences, Guntur, Dr. P. Vijaya, has been elected to the Board of Directors of World Stroke Organisation (WSO). She secured one of the 18 director positions through a global election involving 3,500 members from 95 countries. Announcing the achievement on Tuesday, cardiologist and founder of Lalitha PVS Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. P.V. Raghava Sarma, said Dr. Vijaya will represent the Asia-Oceania region, one of the four continental groups in the WSO, alongside the Americas, Europe, and Africa-Middle East.
He said the election recognises her contributions to clinical stroke care, research, medical education, public awareness and advocacy. The World Stroke Organisation is an international body dedicated to reducing the global burden of stroke through prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, research and education. Vijaya will serve a four-year term from 2026 to 2030. As a member of the board, she will contribute to framing the organisation's global vision and policies, developing international stroke guidelines and educational initiatives, overseeing global stroke programmes, promoting collaboration among stroke specialists and national stroke societies, and strengthening worldwide awareness and capacity-building efforts.
She is scheduled to attend the first meeting of the newly-elected board in Seoul, South Korea, in October. Dr. Raghava Sarma said that the election
reflects Dr. Vijaya's contributions to advancing stroke care in India.
