In an interview, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora addressed the issue of public hygiene and the lack of civic responsibility in India. Advocating for the implementation of Assam's model in Mumbai and across the country, Deora suggested that habitual public urinators should be named, shamed, and fined on public LED screens. He highlighted the contrast in behaviour, noting that while many Indians litter and spit in their own country, they strictly follow rules abroad.
Emphasising the need for strict enforcement, Deora stated, "The fact is that civic sense in India is low, is woefully low compared to other countries." He urged local municipalities and panchayats to build accessible, safe, and clean public toilets, especially for women and senior citizens, while simultaneously cracking the whip on repeat offenders. Deora warned that without a fundamental shift in the cultural mindset and the establishment of both hard and soft infrastructure, India's rapidly urbanising cities are destined to fail.
