Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) authorities conducted a special drive to clear encroachments of footpaths that were obstructing pedestrian movement in parts of Mysuru City on Tuesday. During the drive, various encroachments including temporary sheds and extension of shops by traders onto the footpaths for display of items and goods were removed by the authorities. The drive was carried out on the footpath on both sides of Irwin Road. A similiar exercise to remove the encroachments on Chamaraja Double Road was also taken up in the City.
A statement issued by the MCC said the encroachment clearance drive was carried out on the footpaths on both sides of Irwin Road, from Ayurveda Circle to the Suburban Bus Stand, within the jurisdiction of MCC Zone-6 on Tuesday “as scheduled”. The drive was conducted jointly by the MCC and Police Department. Ahead of the drive, extensive announcements were made through public address systems to create awareness among the public and traders, the statement said. “They were instructed not to encroach upon footpaths and were asked to voluntarily remove existing encroachments,” the MCC said in its statement.
“Such drives will continue in the coming days with the objective of ensuring smooth and safe movement for pedestrians in the city,” the statement added. The drive conducted on Tuesday, however, did not target footpath vendors, who had met the MCC Commissioner on Monday and appealed to the authorities to desist from evicting them till a survey of street vendors is completed and the identity cards are issued. Street Vendors’ Maha Mandala leader Bhaskar Srinivasa Raje Urs, who is also a member of the Town Vending Committee of MCC, said about 3,800 street vendors had already been issued identity cards in Mysuru City.
A tender for a fresh survey of the street vendors in Mysuru has already been invited. Citing the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, Mr. Urs said the authorities cannot evict any street vendor until a survey is completed and ID cards and vending certificates are issued to the street vendors.
