(Source: X) The Uttar Pradesh Police has widened its investigation into the arrest of American national Jordon Brown near the India-Nepal border, with multiple national security angles now under scrutiny, top intelligence sources told CNN-News18. According to sources, investigators are examining whether Brown had any links to missionary groups previously investigated in Northeast India and whether his movements formed part of a wider network operating across India’s eastern frontier. Sources said the probe will also assess whether Brown made any references to Nepali politics, including any association with narratives surrounding the “Greater Nepal" agenda.
Investigators are examining any possible references linked to Nepal PM Balendra Shah’s public display of maps depicting Greater Nepal, sources added. The UP Police is coordinating with multiple central agencies to verify Brown’s claims that he lost his passport in Thailand, travelled to Sri Lanka, entered India by sea, and later stayed in Goa before reaching the Nepal border, according to sources. Investigators are also probing whether Brown was part of a coordinated network of foreign nationals, including missionaries or other individuals, with some allegedly operating in Northeast India while others moved towards regions along the Nepal border. GROWING CONCERNS OVER EASTERN FRONT Top intelligence sources further indicated that Indian agencies have noted an increasing presence of Western military engagement in Bangladesh following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina. According to the sources, this includes joint military exercises and infrastructure development in areas near Rangpur Division, which lies close to India’s strategically significant Siliguri Corridor, commonly known as the “Chicken’s Neck".
Sources said security agencies are assessing whether these developments, when viewed alongside other regional trends, point to an emerging multi-directional security challenge on India’s eastern front. According to intelligence sources, agencies are not ruling out the possibility that external actors could seek to exploit regional instability to undermine India’s security and territorial interests. Officials stressed that investigations and assessments are ongoing, and no conclusions have been reached.
