The Central Crime Branch (CCB) has arrested five habitual offenders for allegedly posing as CCB officers, kidnapping a 25-year-old gym trainer, assaulting him, and demanding ₹5 lakh by threatening to implicate him in a fabricated narcotics case. The case was registered at Shankarpura Police Station under Sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to the complaint, the victim, Mithul Kunder, 25, a gym trainer from J.P. Nagar, had gone to a club on the evening of June 19 to play sports. Around 5.30 p.m., six men arrived in a car, identified themselves as CCB police officers, forcibly stopped the game, and bundled him into the vehicle.
During the drive, the gang allegedly accused him of transporting 500 kg of ganja, seized his bag and mobile phone, and planted an LSD stamp inside his pouch to make the accusation appear genuine. They also allegedly forced him to unlock his phone and took photographs from the device. To convince the victim that they were genuine police officers, the accused drove to J.P. Nagar Police Station, where two of them got out, entered the station premises, and returned to the vehicle after a few minutes. They then drove the victim to Jayanagar 4th Block. The gang demanded ₹1.8 lakh initially, claiming the money was required to pay police officials.
When the victim told them he had only ₹40,000, they rejected the offer and released him, warning him to arrange a larger amount. The following day, on June 20, one of the accused, identified as Sai, allegedly called up the victim and demanded ₹5 lakh, threatening to kill him if he failed to pay. The victim later lodged a complaint, prompting the CCB to launch an investigation. DCP (Crime) Imam Khasim Raja, who supervised the probe, said the accused are habitual offenders with multiple criminal cases against them. During the investigation, officers collected CCTV footage from several locations and tracked the suspects to Rajanukunte, where they were arrested on Monday (July 13).
The police said that when a CCB officer contacted one of the suspects during the investigation, the accused continued to falsely claim that he was a CCB officer. The arrested accused have been identified as Tirumala V., 28, of Yelahanka New Town, Shanth Kumar, 44, of Vidyaranyapura, Prem Sai, 30, of Yelahanka, Ranjeeth Rao, 31, of R.T. Nagar and Namith alias Abhi, 29, of R.T. Nagar. Efforts are on to track down the other accused.
