Belagavi-based NGO Green Saviours Association has launched Srushti Green Homes, an initiative to ensure community engagement in afforestation. The initiative aims to encourage households to increase green cover by planting trees within their home premises. Under the programme, three free saplings of fruiting, flowering and medicinal plants will be provided for planting in open soil.
More than 30 plant varieties, suitable for the Belagavi region and residential spaces, have been selected. The Green Saviours team will assist families with species selection, planting and maintenance to ensure better survival of the saplings. The initiative was launched at the house of Irappa Belavi of Jadhav Nagar on Sunday.
Irappa Belavi became the first recipient of saplings. Launched by environment protection activist Sameer Majli, Green Saviours has organised afforestation drive on 535 Sundays till now. Members have been planting and maintaining trees across Belagavi and surrounding areas. They are creating awareness about the need for greener neighbourhoods and promoting biodiversity conservation.
They have also motivated several farmers to switch to organic crops. Details can be had from the Green Saviours office on Ph: 9731151919.
