An India Today ground report from Baghrami Mandi, Kabul's largest flour market, highlights the impact of the ongoing Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict on regional trade. With traditional border crossings like Torkham and Chaman shut for months, the Taliban government has shifted its trade focus toward Central Asia, Iran, India, and China. The transition has led to a surge in new trade routes, achieving one billion dollars in imports and exports over recent months.
However, the shift has caused commodity prices to escalate, with a bag of rice previously costing 2,000 Afghani now priced at 3,500 Afghani due to rerouting through Iran. Despite the rising costs and the mandate for traders to settle Pakistani accounts within three months, an Afghan official stated that the country seeks good relations but will prioritize national interests if enmity continues.
The official claimed that market conditions remain normal and emphasized a growing focus on domestic production and self-reliance to mitigate the impact of closed borders.
