Rajasthan Launches Prenatal Campaign After 18 Maternal Deaths Expose Systemic Hospital Failures

The Rajasthan government has launched a statewide intensive screening campaign for pregnant women starting July 15, following the reported deaths of 18 mothers across districts including Kota, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Bhilwara, and Banswara. Under this five-day initiative, ASHA and Anganwadi workers will conduct village surveys to monitor prenatal health and upload records to a portal. The move comes amid scrutiny of the state's healthcare infrastructure and the health minister's response to the crisis.
Discussions highlight systemic failures within government hospitals, pointing to adulterated drugs, missing medical protocols, and severe staff shortages. Doctors in state-run facilities are reportedly overworked and lack proper resources, while senior medical professionals have shifted to newer medical colleges or private practice. ASHA workers, tasked with executing the new screening campaign, face challenges of low compensation and high workloads. The government's reliance on community health workers has raised questions about its commitment to addressing the primary infrastructural and operational gaps existing within the hospitals where the maternal deaths occurred.
