A handloom weaver from the famed textile town of Sircilla in the neighbouring State of Telangana has presented a rare silk saree that fits into a matchbox to Goddess Bhramaramba at Srisailam temple, on Tuesday (July 14). Handloom weaver Nalla Vijay Kumar, recipient of 'Kalaratna’ award, handed over the saree to Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy temple Trust Board chairman Pothugunta Ramesh Naidu. Member of the Board of Trustees Kode Kanthivardhini was also in attendance. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vijay Kumar said that he, along with his family members, wove this silk saree on a loom over a period of one week.
The saree measures 5.5 metres in length and 48 inches in width and weighs approximately 200 grams, Mr. Vijay Kumar explained. Designed in the traditional “Ikkat” pattern, the saree can easily fit into a small matchbox when folded. He attributed the creation of this rare garment to the grace of the Goddess. Ramesh Naidu accepted the special silk saree on behalf of the Devasthanam and commended Mr. Vijay Kumar for his talent and said that this traditional silk saree stands as a testament to the skills of our handloom artisans.
He highlighted the significance of the handloom sector within the country’s cultural fabric and noted that handloom weaving is not merely a profession but a magnificent art form passed down through generations. “The handloom textiles embody the creativity, craftsmanship, and dedication of the artisans,” the Trust Board chairman said and urged everyone to support handloom products. Special darshan arrangements were made for the handloom artisan and his team who presented the textile. Meanwhile, Mr. Ramesh Naidu conducted a surprise inspection of the queue lines and the donation center and instructed officials to accord high priority to ensuring a comfortable darshan experience for devotees.
He asked officials to ensure continuous provision of drinking water and snacks in the queue lines to avoid any inconvenience to devotees.
