Punjab Congress Rift Reaches High Command, Rahul Gandhi Holds Crucial Meeting Published By, Last Updated: July 14, 2026, 14:21 IST The meeting is understood to have focused on the feedback submitted by Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel after his recent round of consultations with leaders in the state. Rapid Read The present chief, Raja Warring, has been associated with the Youth Congress and the NSUI and is seen as being close to Rahul Gandhi. (X/@RajaBrar_INC) The Congress High Command has once again stepped in to address the growing factionalism within its Punjab unit, with a high-level meeting convened in New Delhi on Tuesday amid persistent infighting ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. According to Congress sources, MP Rahul Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge and AICC general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal met at 10 Rajaji Marg to review the situation in Punjab. The meeting is understood to have focused on the feedback submitted by Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel after his recent round of consultations with leaders in the state.
The meeting comes at a crucial juncture for the Congress, which has been battling an increasingly public leadership tussle in Punjab. The latest crisis centres around Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, whose continuation as the state unit president has been challenged by a section led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and senior leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. The dissenting camp has argued that a change in the state leadership is necessary to unite the organisation before the Assembly polls. However, the Congress high command has so far refused to alter its decision, reiterating its support for Warring while warning leaders against indiscipline and public factionalism. Earlier this month, Baghel held separate meetings with both camps in Chandigarh in an effort to bridge differences. Those discussions, however, failed to produce a breakthrough, with the Channi-Randhawa faction maintaining its demand for Warring’s removal. Baghel Sends A Clear Signal Even before Tuesday’s meeting, Baghel had sought to draw a line under the leadership debate by declaring that “Rahul Gandhi is the only face of Congress in Punjab," signalling that the party intends to project a collective leadership under the national command rather than encourage competing state-level power centres.
He also made it clear that no pressure tactics would influence decisions taken by the Congress high command. Punjab remains one of the few major states where Congress continues to retain a significant electoral footprint despite being out of power. The leadership believes that a divided organisation could undermine its prospects of taking on both the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP in the 2027 Assembly election. The Baghel report, prepared after extensive consultations with party leaders, is expected to help the high command decide its next course of action. While no immediate organisational changes are anticipated, Tuesday’s meeting underlines that the Congress leadership is keen to prevent the internal rift from escalating further as preparations for the next electoral battle gather pace.
