(Source: Reuters) India on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack on two commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz that left an Indian seafarer dead and several others injured, and said it had lodged a strong protest with Iran over the incident. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must cease immediately. It said that India was “deeply concerned" over the attacks on MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, which were carrying a combined crew of 46, including 30 Indian nationals. One of the 12 Indian crew members aboard MT Al Bahiyah was killed, while another sustained injuries. On MT Mombasa, nine of the 18 Indian nationals on board were injured, including two who are reported to be in serious condition. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased Indian national and wish speedy recovery to those injured," the ministry said.
MEA Summons Iranian Diplomat The MEA said India’s Mission and Consulate in the UAE were in touch with local authorities and closely monitoring the situation to ensure all possible assistance to the affected Indian seafarers. Also Read: MEA Summons Iranian Diplomat Over Hormuz Tanker Strike That Killed Indian Sailor The ministry also said the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi was summoned on Tuesday morning, during which India lodged a strong protest over the attacks. “We strongly condemn these attacks and acts of violence targeting seafarers and disrupting free and safe navigation through international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz," the MEA said. “The Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi was summoned this morning by the Ministry of External Affairs, and a strong protest against these attacks was lodged with him," the ministry said. India Calls For End To Attacks On Commercial Ships In Gulf Expressing concern over the renewed escalation in West Asia, India called for an immediate halt to hostilities and urged all sides to return to dialogue and diplomacy. “We also reiterate our deep concern on account of the resumption of attacks and escalation of hostilities in the West-Asian region and call for immediate cessation of violence and a return to dialogue and diplomacy in the interests of peace, security and stability in the region," the statement said.
