Mackenzie Naught, 25, of St. John, entered a guilty plea to sexual misconduct involving a minor, the Whitman County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said. Mackenzie Naught, who previously taught first grade, will remain held in the Whitman County Jail until her scheduled sentencing on August 28.
The investigation into Mackenzie Naught began in May when her husband contacted authorities. According to a probable cause affidavit, the husband discovered text messages between Mackenzie Naught and the teenager while reviewing her phone during a period of ongoing marital friction. When confronted by the husband, the 16-year-old boy admitted to the relationship, and Mackenzie Naught subsequently acknowledged the behavior when questioned. According to court documents, the teenager told investigators that the two had communicated via Snapchat before he picked Mackenzie Naught up in his truck. He drove her to a remote location where Mackenzie Naught initiated sexual activity. The victim stated that he eventually stopped the encounter because he felt uncomfortable and then drove Mackenzie Naught back to her residence. Investigators were able to verify the teenager’s timeline and account of the evening using data from a tracking device, which confirmed his vehicle’s location at the remote site.
While Mackenzie Naught initially minimized the encounter to police, claiming they had only kissed, she later admitted during questioning that they engaged in sexual activity. Following her arrest, Mackenzie Naught’s husband filed for divorce in June, according to Whitman County court records. The St. John School District also severed ties with Mackenzie Naught following the allegations. Under the terms of her plea, prosecutors state that Mackenzie Naught faces a prison sentence ranging from six to 12 months. Upon her release, she will be legally required to register as a sex offender for 10 years. Additionally, the court has implemented a five-year sexual assault protection order to restrict Mackenzie Naught from having any contact with the victim.
