US Man Caught Near India-Nepal Border Without Passport Claims Navy Background Published By, Last Updated: July 14, 2026, 10:45 IST Officials said investigations are ongoing and security agencies are working to verify Jordan Brown's nationality, travel history and his claim of having served in the US Navy. Police said Jordan Brown was unable to produce a passport, visa or any other valid travel documents at the time of his arrest. A man claiming to be a former US Navy officer and a resident of California was arrested by Indian border forces while allegedly attempting to cross into Nepal without valid travel documents, authorities said. The 36-year-old, identified as Jordan Brown, was detained by personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) during a routine patrol near the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district on Saturday.
According to officials, Jordan Brown was intercepted near border pillar number 516 in the Mainihwa area under the Sonauli police station limits. When signalled to stop, he allegedly attempted to flee before being apprehended by the 22nd Battalion of the SSB. During questioning, Jordan Brown identified himself as a US citizen from California and claimed he had previously served as an officer in the US Navy. Indian authorities, however, said they are still verifying his identity and other claims. Police said Jordan Brown was unable to produce a passport, visa or any other valid travel documents at the time of his arrest. The case has drawn attention because Jordan Brown allegedly told investigators that he had spent nearly seven months in India without a passport after losing the document while travelling in Thailand on a tourist visa.
“He subsequently reached Sri Lanka via a sea route and arrived in India from there by sea on November 2, 2025. Since then, he had been residing in Goa," Additional Superintendent of Police Siddharth said. Authorities said Jordan Brown later travelled from Goa to Bengaluru before making his way to the Sonauli border, where he was allegedly attempting to enter Nepal. A search of his belongings led to the recovery of Rs 31,460 in cash and two mobile phones. However, officials said he failed to provide any documentation establishing his identity or legal entry into India. Following questioning by the SSB and other security agencies, Jordan Brown was handed over to Uttar Pradesh Police for further legal action. A case has been registered at Sonauli Police Station under provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act relating to illegal entry and stay in India.
