Nearly six years after the brutal killing of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma in the 2020 Delhi riots, the family got some relief after the Karkardooma court on Monday convicted former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and four others for their involvement in Sharma’s killing. In February 2020, during the communal violence in northeast Delhi, IB officer Ankit Sharma was allegedly attacked by a mob and suffered multiple sharp and blunt force injuries. He had died of head injuries, and his body was later found in a drain in north-east Delhi’s Chand Bagh. Though the verdict brought relief to Sharma’s kin, it also revived their painful memories of the Delhi riots. Recalling what happened on February 25, 2020, while speaking to The Times Of India, Sharma’s brother said, “He died serving his country, serving its people… I can’t even describe what they did to him." Ankit’s brother said that he was specifically targeted by the mob because of his religion. and added that he lost his life while serving the nation. “My brother was on duty when they brutally murdered him. He was serving the country. Intelligence Bureau officers generally do not disclose their identity, so he identified himself as a Delhi Police official," he said. “He was asked by his seniors to go and check the situation. What was his fault? He was simply doing his duty. We believe he was targeted because of his religion, and that pain has stayed with us every single day," the brother added, while speaking to PTI.
Recalling the brutality of his death, he said to TOI, “His body had acid marks on several parts, including his face and chest, multiple stab wounds everywhere." Speaking about the court’s judgment, Sharma’s brother said that the conviction has forced the family members to recall the harrowing memories of Sharma’s death. “There is grief, there is anger, and there is an emptiness that can never be filled. We lost one of the strongest pillars of our family, and no judgment can bring him back," he said, while speaking to PTI. According to the family members, Sharma’s death changed their lives completely, and they moved out of Delhi after the incident. “We shifted out of Delhi just two or three months after the incident. We never felt safe staying there after what happened. We now live in a rented accommodation in Uttar Pradesh. Our lives have completely changed. The sense of fear stays with us," said the brother, while speaking to PTI. Speaking about the legal battle with TOI, Ankit’s father said, “For the first three years, police conducted an inquiry. They helped us in any way they could during this period. After that, proceedings continued for another three years. I had to appear before the court multiple times and undergo cross-questioning, but I stood by the truth." Although the accused have been convicted, the family believes that the fight is not yet over. Ankit’s father hoped that the convicts would get the maximum punishment as per the law. “They should either be hanged or get the strictest possible punishment for a crime like this," he said.
