Nepal PM Balen Shah's Toughest Tests Yet: Reform, Expectations And A Gen-Z Revolt Published By, Last Updated: July 14, 2026, 07:46 IST Since taking office, Balen Shah has sought to implement a wide-ranging reform programme aimed at overhauling governance. Nepal Prime Minister Balen Shah. Nepal Prime Minister Balen Shah is facing growing political pressure as protests over the eviction of squatters and landless communities spread across Kathmandu in one of the most significant tests of his leadership since taking office. The demonstrations are notable not only because of their scale but also because many participants belong to the same Gen-Z movement that helped propel Balen Shah to national power. The latest unrest comes as Balen Shah’s government confronts a series of political, economic and governance challenges, ranging from delivering on ambitious reform promises to managing soaring public expectations. Delivering On An Ambitious Reform Agenda Since taking office, Balen Shah has sought to implement a wide-ranging reform programme aimed at overhauling governance, improving public services and increasing accountability.
His administration’s ambitious agenda has generated optimism among supporters who view him as a break from Nepal’s traditional political establishment. However, it has also attracted scrutiny from critics who question whether the government can deliver on its promises within a limited timeframe and amid bureaucratic resistance. Managing High Public Expectations Few leaders in recent Nepali history have entered office with expectations as high as Balen Shah’s. His popularity among young voters was built on promises of clean governance, efficiency and meaningful change. That support has translated into pressure on the government to quickly improve employment opportunities, tackle corruption and address long-standing public grievances. Pursuing Accountability For Past Crackdowns Another sensitive issue confronting Balen Shah’s administration has been the handling of investigations linked to last year’s Gen-Z-led anti-government protests. The movement played a major role in reshaping Nepal’s political landscape and ultimately contributed to the fall of the previous government. Efforts to pursue accountability for actions taken during the unrest have placed Balen Shah’s government under political pressure from both supporters and opponents.
Gen-Z Supporters Turn Into Critics The controversy surrounding squatters and displaced families represents a different kind of challenge for Balen Shah. Unlike disputes involving opposition parties or political rivals, the latest criticism is coming from activists and young people who were once among his strongest supporters. Hundreds of protesters gathered in Kathmandu on July 12, demanding justice for evicted squatters and accusing authorities of violating human rights. The demonstrations were organised by the Joint Squatters Front, with participants calling for an end to alleged abuses against poor communities, illegal arrests and forced evictions without proper rehabilitation. The protests were sparked by an eviction campaign launched in April across Kathmandu Valley and other parts of Nepal. According to reports, authorities dismantled structures belonging to more than 2,600 families, affecting around 15,000 people. Evictions And Arrests Fuel Anger The movement has gained a distinctly Gen-Z character, with young activists accusing the government of failing to protect vulnerable communities.
