Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi has shared a personal account of an emotional conversation he says he had with former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during a controversy involving the Election Commission. Quraishi said the incident took place after the Election Commission found that then Union Minister Salman Khurshid had violated the Model Code of Conduct during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
He alleged that criticism of the Election Commission by some Congress leaders led him to raise concerns with the Prime Minister's office. According to Quraishi, Dr. Manmohan Singh reacted emotionally and expressed his deep respect for the Election Commission.
