(X/@DovySimuMMA) Hrishikesh Koloth, a 27-year-old aspiring Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter from Kerala, was killed in a rare bear attack while working at a remote uranium exploration site in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, on May 8. Koloth had moved to Canada three years ago to join his elder brother, Arjun, in Penticton, British Columbia. At the time of the incident, he was employed as a contract technician at the Zoo Bay property operated by Vancouver-based UraniumX Discovery Corp near Nordbye Lake, around 850 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
Authorities said a civilian worker at the site shot and killed the bear following the attack. The animal’s remains were later sent to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon for a necropsy as investigators work to determine its health, physical condition, and other possible factors linked to the incident. Apart from his work in Canada, Koloth had spent more than a decade training in boxing and was determined to pursue a professional MMA career with hopes of one day reaching the UFC. “That was his dream. That’s why he came here," Arjun was quoted as saying by CBC. “He wanted to fight in the UFC." Arjun said his brother trained with Skoden Martial Arts in Penticton and added that “everyone" believed in his potential.
“It shouldn’t have been like this." UraniumX Discovery Corp CEO Esen Boldkhuu expressed condolences following the incident. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. The safety and well-being of our employees, contractors, and all personnel working on our projects is, and will always remain, our highest priority," Boldkhuu said in a statement. The Saskatchewan Conservation Officer Service’s wildlife human attack response team is investigating the case alongside the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service. Officials noted that fatal bear attacks in Saskatchewan are extremely uncommon. Koloth’s death is only the fourth recorded fatal incident in the province’s history. The last such case was reported in August 2020, when a 44-year-old woman was killed near her cabin north of Buffalo Narrows.
The only other recorded deaths occurred in separate incidents near Nipawin Provincial Park in 1983.
