Representatives of Street Vendors’ Maha Mandala met Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner M.K. Savitha on Monday (July 13) and urged her to put off the eviction drive against footpath vendors in the city till a survey of street vendors is completed. Street Vendors’ Maha Mandala leader Bhaskar Srinivasa Raje Urs, who is also a member of the Town Vending Committee of MCC, sought to draw the Commissioner’s attention to the pending survey of street vendors in MCC limits.
A tender for the survey has already been invited. Citing the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, Mr. Urs said the authorities cannot evict any street vendor until a survey is completed and ID cards and vending certificates are issued to the street vendors. He pointed out that already, several street vendors in Mysuru had been issued with ID cards as per a previously conducted survey.
Now, a fresh survey has been ordered and a tender has already been invited. Before meeting the MCC Commissioner, street vendors from different parts of the city met on the Cauvery Basin Command Area Development Authority premises near the MCC office, where they shared their anxiety
over the crackdown on footpath vendors by the authorities. It may be mentioned here that MCC authorities had launched a footpath encroachment removal drive recently and took down several kiosks and petty shops, apart from evicting other vendors from the footpaths in various parts of the city.
