A Delhi court has convicted a suspended political leader and former councillor, along with four others, for the murder of an Intelligence Bureau officer during the 2020 communal riots in the national capital. The accused were found guilty of murder, promoting enmity between different religions, rioting, and assault, though they were acquitted of criminal conspiracy charges. Six other individuals were acquitted in the same case.
The Intelligence Bureau staffer was killed in February 2020 amid widespread violence linked to protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act. According to the prosecution, the officer was repeatedly attacked, with the postmortem report revealing 51 injuries caused by sharp and blunt weapons before his body was recovered from a drain. The 2020 riots resulted in 53 deaths and left hundreds injured across several areas in northeast Delhi.
The court is yet to release the detailed judgment outlining the specific role of the convicted former councillor in the larger conspiracy.
