(AP File) In a direct escalation with a branch of the United Nations, the legal team of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has issued a sharply worded rebuttal to a UN report on the 2024 violence in Bangladesh. The letter, sent on behalf of Hasina, accuses the UN of spreading “manifestly false and inflammatory misinformation" and attempting to help “legitimise" the regime change operation in the country in August 2024. At the heart of the dispute are the casualty figures linked to the anti-government unrest and subsequent crackdown. According to Hasina’s legal team, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) report claimed that around 1,400 people were killed during the violence.
The letter contests this figure, pointing out that the Bangladesh government’s own estimate stands at 834 deaths. It further argues that even estimates associated with the student movement that spearheaded the protests placed the toll closer to 650. “That a Report of your Office has been used in this context to confirm manifestly false and inflammatory misinformation, and to legitimise the violent overthrow of the Government, is unfortunate and sets a troubling precedent for the potential manipulation of the UN human rights procedures," the letter, whose copy is in possession of News18, reads. In the letter dated May 28, senior British barrister Steven Powles KC, writing on behalf of Hasina, alleged that the UN fact-finding report had grossly inflated the number of deaths and demanded a “public retraction and correction" from the UN rights body. The UN report in question was an OHCHR Fact-Finding Report published on 12th February 2025, in which UN human rights investigators accused the Hasina government of brutal crackdown and quoted the casualty figure at 1400.
In the same report, the UN body also accused the former Awami League government of using violence against protesters that could amount to “crimes against humanity". But now, citing official figures of the Bangladesh government and calling the UN’s conclusions “deeply flawed", the legal response alleges that the international body relied on politically motivated sources while ignoring contradictory evidence and official records. The letter argues that the report amplified unverified narratives that painted the former government as solely responsible for the bloodshed, while overlooking attacks on state institutions, police personnel and ruling party supporters during the upheaval. The dispute comes amid continuing political polarisation in Bangladesh following the dramatic collapse of Hasina’s long-running administration after months of unrest, mass protests and international scrutiny. Critics of the former government have accused it of carrying out a brutal crackdown on dissent, while Hasina’s supporters maintain that the protests were hijacked by violent and foreign-backed elements seeking to destabilise the state.
