'Guardian Of Hormuz': Trump Reinstates Iran Naval Blockade, To Charge 20% On Cargo Shipped Published By, Last Updated: July 13, 2026, 20:08 IST It was not immediately clear how the proposed 20 per cent charge would be implemented, or how other countries and commercial shipping operators would respond to the proposal. Rapid Read Hours after saying on Fox & Friends that the US would become the "guardian" of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump formalised the proposal on Truth Social, announcing a 20% cargo charge and the return of the "Iranian blockade". (IMAGE: AFP) US President Donald Trump on Monday declared that the United States would become the “Guardian of the Hormuz Strait", announcing the reinstatement of what he called the “Iranian blockade" and saying Washington would charge 20 per cent on all cargo shipped through the strategic waterway as reimbursement for providing security. “The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran.
We are reinstating the THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE… All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as ‘THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,’ but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security to this very volatile section of the World," he added. The announcement came hours after Trump made similar remarks during an interview with Fox & Friends, where he said the United States would “become the guardian of the Strait" and insisted Washington had been protecting the vital maritime corridor “for nothing." “We’re going to get paid for guarding it. A lot of money, but we just want to be reimbursed for doing all of this, for putting our people in danger," Trump had said during the interview.
It was not immediately clear how the proposed 20 per cent charge would be implemented, under what legal framework it would operate, or how other countries and commercial shipping operators would respond to the proposal. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) pushed back against US President Donald Trump’s declaration that Washington would become the “Guardian of the Hormuz Strait", insisting Tehran continued to exercise authority over the strategic waterway. An IRGC spokesperson said Iran would continue to assert its control over the Strait of Hormuz and resist what it described as foreign interference. “We continue to assert our authority and control over the Strait of Hormuz with strength and power, and we will force foreign powers and their allies to surrender to the will of the Iranian people," an IRGC spokesperson said.
