(File Image) In one of the strongest public criticisms yet from within the Trinamool Congress, senior party leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has openly questioned the functioning of the organisation, alleging collapse of internal democracy, institutionalised corruption, and excessive control by political consultancy firm IPAC. Speaking candidly on the state of the party, Roy said he believes the Trinamool Congress is heading towards disintegration because it has failed to introspect after electoral setbacks. “Party will disintegrate, I believe. They are not accepting that they have lost," Roy said. ‘No Scope For Discussion’ Roy alleged that the party no longer allows internal debate or dissent and claimed that all decisions are now being taken in a one-sided manner. “I have tried to say certain things, but there is no scope for discussion in our party," he said.
According to Roy, the decision-making structure within the party has become excessively centralised. “It’s one-sided. It’s only one person saying," he remarked, indicating that democratic processes inside the organisation had effectively collapsed. ‘I Tweeted Anarchy Because It Was Anarchy’ Defending his earlier social media posts in which he had described the prevailing situation as “anarchy," Roy maintained that his remarks reflected reality. “I tweeted anarchy because it was anarchy," he said. His comments are significant because Roy has long been considered one of the senior-most parliamentarians and intellectual voices within the Trinamool Congress. Allegations of Corruption After 2016 Roy also levelled serious allegations regarding corruption within sections of the party leadership after 2016. “After 2016, leaders who were in the helm of affairs grabbed money in their own way," he alleged. He further claimed that corruption gradually became embedded within the political structure. “Corruption became institutionalised in every way," Roy said. The allegations come at a time when the Trinamool Congress has repeatedly faced attacks from opposition parties over corruption-related controversies in West Bengal. Remarks On RG Kar Issue Referring to the RG Kar issue, Roy claimed he had protested against alleged attempts to tamper with evidence.
“Everybody knows that," he said. Roy further alleged that instead of addressing his concerns, authorities responded by issuing him a police summons. “Imagine, a police summons," Roy remarked. He did not elaborate further on the nature of the summons or the proceedings connected to it. ‘Government Has Started Well’ Despite his criticism of the Trinamool Congress, Roy appeared cautious in his assessment of the newly formed BJP government in the state. “This government has started well. I will wait and watch," he said. The statement is being seen as politically significant given Roy’s longstanding association with the Trinamool Congress and his recent distancing from sections of the party leadership. Sharp Criticism Of IPAC Roy also targeted political consultancy firm IPAC, alleging that the organisation exercised disproportionate influence over the party’s functioning. “A marketing agency may help, but here they were running things," he said. He alleged that strategic and organisational decisions inside the party were effectively being dictated by the consultancy. Roy also made a financial allegation linked to IPAC. “I have been told they took Rs 20 lakh and all," he claimed However, the allegation has not been independently verified, and Roy did not provide documentary evidence in support of the claim.
Indirect Swipe At Abhishek Banerjee? On being asked about responsibility for the party’s electoral defeat, Roy made a pointed but indirect remark. “Everybody knows for whom the party got defeated. I will not mention anybody’s name," he said. Though he avoided directly naming anyone, the statement is likely to intensify speculation regarding internal tensions within the Trinamool Congress leadership. Roy’s remarks are politically significant because they represent one of the rare instances of a senior Trinamool leader publicly questioning both the organisational structure and strategic direction of the party in such direct terms.
