A 45-year-old woman who was allegedly attacked with an axe by her son-in-law over a dowry dispute succumbed to her injuries at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Sunday. The accused, identified as Akbar, a labourer, has been arrested by the police. The deceased, Roshan Bi, was living with her children near Medi Agrahara in Vidyaranyapura after her family moved to Bengaluru from their native village in Surpur taluk, Yadgir district, about seven years ago.
According to the police and the victim’s family, Akbar had been demanding two tolas of gold for his three-month-old son and had allegedly threatened to kill his mother-in-law if the demand was not met. On Friday, July 10, he allegedly attacked Roshan Bi with an axe, inflicting grievous injuries. She was rushed to a nearby hospital by residents but died during treatment on Sunday. The police have registered a murder case at the Yelahanka New Town Police Station and are investigating the incident.
Akbar’s wife, Ramzan Bi, alleged that she had been subjected to dowry harassment ever since their love marriage seven years ago. She claimed the harassment intensified after the birth of their second child, with Akbar repeatedly insisting that her family provide two tolas of gold. She further alleged that he had earlier attempted to set her on fire by pouring kerosene on her and had frequently threatened her family.
Family members said Akbar had eloped with Ramzan Bi when she was studying in class 7 in their native village. They eventually accepted the marriage as the two were relatives. The couple has a four-year-old daughter and a three-month-old son.
