Deputy Commissioner Rahul Pandve has appealed to farmers to cultivate rain-fed crops that require less water, as pre-monsoon and monsoon rainfall for the 2026-27 kharif season has been inadequate. Due to the low volume of water currently available in the reservoirs in the district, supply is sufficient only to meet drinking water requirements.
And, it will be difficult to release water for agricultural crops under the present circumstances. The State government’s priority is to ensure the supply of drinking water, making it imperative to utilise the available water reserves with extreme prudence, he said in a release. He further stated that farmers should not undertake sowing operations relying on reservoir water.
Instead, they should cultivate rain-fed, low water consuming or short-term crops selecting them based on the advice of officials from the Agriculture and Horticulture departments. The State government is continuously monitoring the reservoir’s water level, rainfall and inflow conditions and an appropriate decision will be taken in the coming days if there is a favourable change in the situation.
“Farmers should extend cooperation to the district administration keeping in mind the sustainable use of water resources and the welfare of the farming community,” Mr. Pandve said.
