As monsoon showers cause severe waterlogging across major Indian cities like Gurugram, Bengaluru, Noida, and Mumbai, car owners face significant challenges with insurance claims. A standard third-party insurance policy does not cover damage to your own vehicle. To claim damages for natural calamities like floods and cyclones, a comprehensive insurance policy is required. However, standard comprehensive policies often reject claims for engine damage caused by hydrostatic lock if a driver attempts to start a flooded car.
An engine protection add-on is necessary to cover internal parts. Experts advise against starting a submerged vehicle and recommend using roadside assistance to tow the car. In cases where trees fall on vehicles, owners should document the damage with photographs and contact their insurer within 48 hours before moving the debris. Additionally, zero depreciation cover helps maximize payouts, while vehicles are declared a total loss if repair costs exceed 75 percent of the Insurance Declared Value as per IRDAI regulations.
