Following the recent incident in Kota where five mothers died after childbirth due to substandard medicines, Rajasthan is facing another maternal health crisis. Within a single week, nine women have died across two government hospitals in the state. Five deaths were reported at the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Bhilwara, while four more women, including a minor, died at a district hospital in Banswara.
All cases involved the obstetrics and gynecology departments, with some women having undergone cesarean surgeries. The Rajasthan government has ordered an expert-level investigation, dispatching specialist teams from Jaipur to both hospitals. A five-member committee of senior doctors is examining patient histories, operation theater protocols, medical records, and administered medicines. Investigators are also reviewing infection control measures and emergency response standards. While preliminary assessments indicate complications like severe anemia and high blood pressure in some cases, the final causes of death will be determined after laboratory analysis and a complete review of treatment records.
Officials have promised departmental action if negligence is established.
