His remarks came as US and Iranian forces traded intense missile and drone attacks over the weekend and into Monday, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. Tehran claimed it had struck American military facilities across the Gulf and maintained that the Strait of Hormuz remained closed, pushing global oil prices higher.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Monday that they had targeted US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait as part of their response to American strikes. The Guards also claimed to have destroyed radar systems in Oman and hit fuel storage tanks and ammunition depots at Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan. The US military, meanwhile, said it carried out strikes on several Iranian military targets on Sunday. The operation targeted Iran’s air defence systems, coastal radar installations, missile and drone capabilities, as well as small boats, using aircraft, naval vessels and unmanned aerial vehicles. Fresh explosions were reported on Monday in the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, located along the Strait of Hormuz, and on nearby Qeshm Island.
Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency cited local residents in reporting the blasts, though Reuters said it could not independently verify the claims. Bahrain also said its air defence systems had intercepted and destroyed several Iranian missiles and drones during attacks early on Monday.
