The development falls in line with the measures initiated by the Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari-led government to strengthen border security by facilitating the construction of Border Security Force (BSF) Outposts and barbed-wire fencing. In a post on ‘X’, Malviya cited a report by news agency ANI that highlighted how locals are donating their land to facilitate barbed wire fencing along the international border.
For context, West Bengal shares a 2,216-km border with Bangladesh — the longest among Indian states. “Local Hindus are voluntarily donating their land to the BSF so that border fencing can be completed at the earliest. People living along the border are fed up with smugglers, illegal infiltrators, and the complete collapse of border security. They want the fencing finished without delay", the BJP leader wrote. “Locals are not resisting the fencing, they are actively supporting it. The reality is clear: Mamata Banerjee wanted the border to remain porous for smugglers and Bangladeshi vote-bank politics", he wrote. Illegal Migration, Safety Risk Among Major Factors According to a report by ANI, three residents of Satgram Manabari area of Mathabhanga I Block in Cooch Behar district voluntarily donated 33-decimal land to facilitate the construction of border fencing along the India-Bangladesh frontier. Citing illegal migration, safety risks, and damage to their agricultural properties, they pressed for the need for enhanced security along the India-Bangladesh border. The issue of illegal Bangladeshi migrants remained a key flashpoint in the West Bengal Assembly Election, with the BJP constantly questioning the previous Mamata-led TMC government over allegedly encouraging infiltration. After Suvendu Adhikari was sworn-in as the Chief Minister — post the BJP’s historic win in Bengal that ended a decade-old rule of the TMC — the government launched a major crackdown on illegal migrants, setting up designated holding centres in multiple districts to detain suspected undocumented foreigners.
