(X) Karnataka minister Venkataramanappa passed away following a heart attack at a private hospital in Bengaluru early Friday morning, according to family sources. He was 80. Sources said the veteran Congress leader, who had been receiving treatment for age-related health issues, died at around 6 am, news agency PTI reported.
Venkataramanappa was a prominent political figure from Karnataka’s Tumakuru district and served four terms as an MLA during his political career. He also held ministerial positions twice. Known for his grassroots connections, he was widely recognised as a leader of the oppressed sections and enjoyed significant popularity in the Pavagada region. He is survived by his son, HV Venkatesh, who is currently the MLA from Pavagada, along with other family members. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara visited the hospital to pay his last respects and later met the bereaved family members. Speaking to reporters, Parameshwara described the death as a “deeply painful loss" and remembered Venkataramanappa as a humble leader devoted to public service.
“He earned a name for himself through public service and simplicity. I pray that his soul rests in peace and that God gives strength to the family to bear this loss," he said. The minister said Venkataramanappa became a prominent leader of oppressed communities in Tumakuru district through years of public work and political struggles. “He had done commendable work during his tenure as minister. Even after his son Venkatesh became MLA from Pavagada, people continued to affectionately refer to Venkataramanappa as MLA. He was immensely popular in the constituency and was also personally close to me. His demise is an irreparable loss to the Congress party," Parameshwara added.
