An eight-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a 33-year-old security guard, identified as Islam Parvez, inside a godown in Mumbai's Pydhonie area. The accused, who hails from Jharkhand, allegedly took the minor into the godown when no one was watching. The girl's mother and neighbours grew suspicious when they could not find her and subsequently barged into the closed godown, catching the accused.
Parvez attempted to flee but was apprehended by the locals and handed over to the Pydhonie police. The incident triggered massive protests, with hundreds of residents blocking roads outside the police station and demanding immediate justice. Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar intervened to pacify the crowd, assuring them of a speedy trial. The police have booked the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
A local court has remanded the accused to police custody until July 18 as the investigation continues. Heavy police deployment remains in the area to prevent further untoward incidents.
