Rapid Read File photo of Mumbai police. (Representative image) An 8-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a security guard inside a restroom in Mumbai’s Pydhonie area, police said. The accused was arrested shortly after a complaint was lodged on Sunday, while the girl was admitted to a hospital for treatment. The alleged assault sparked protests in the area, with hundreds of residents assembling outside the Pydhonie police station on Sunday and demanding strict punishment for the accused.
Eyewitnesses said Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, who visited the police station after learning about the incident, was surrounded by some protesters. They raised slogans calling for stringent action against the accused. The protest briefly disrupted traffic after demonstrators blocked the road outside the police station. Police later cleared the area, dispersed the crowd and restored normal movement, an official said. According to the official, heavy police deployment has been made in the locality to prevent any flare-up or untoward incident. Rohit Pawar Demands Speedy Justice Reacting to the incident, NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar described the alleged assault on the minor as an “outrageous and extremely serious" incident, noting that it came soon after the sentencing in the Nasrapur case involving the rape and murder of a three-year-old child in Pune district.
In a post on X, Pawar said the “absence of swift justice" in such cases had weakened the deterrence of the law. He also called for speedy disposal of such trials and the immediate implementation of the Shakti Act, which provides stringent punishment for such offences. The Opposition MLA said he had raised the issue during the recently concluded legislature session and urged the government to act while praying for the girl’s speedy recovery. Referring to the Nasrapur case, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said last month that a 65-year-old man was convicted and awarded a triple death sentence within 60 days of the crime.
