Rapid Read Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah (Source: PTI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Jammu and Kashmir unit, has issued a notice to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, demanding that he either provide evidence to support his allegations that the BJP attempted to “poach" Conference (NC) MLAs or issue a public apology. The BJP has warned that if CM Abdullah fails to substantiate his claims or apologise, it will file a Rs 100 crore defamation suit against him over his remarks alleging that the BJP offered Rs 20–30 crore to MLAs to switch sides.
The party has also indicated that it may file a complaint against the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister over the allegations. The controversy erupted after CM Abdullah accused the BJP of attempting to destabilise his Conference-led government by allegedly offering money, ministerial positions and promises related to statehood to MLAs. What Omar Abdullah Said While addressing a workers’ convention at the mausoleum of his grandparents at Hazratbal in Srinagar on the 26th death anniversary of his grandmother, Akbar Jehan, Abdullah claimed that attempts were being made to break the Conference and lure its MLAs. According to reports, Abdullah claimed that a BJP leader and a Supreme Court lawyer had approached one of his MLAs with an offer of Rs 20–30 crore, a ministerial berth and restoration of statehood in exchange for switching sides.
Abdullah said the alleged attempts would not succeed and claimed that the MLAs had rejected such offers. BJP Rejects Allegations The BJP has rejected Abdullah’s allegations, calling them “highly irresponsible and baseless." The party has demanded that the chief minister either present evidence to support his claims or apologise publicly. The BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit said making such allegations without proof harmed the party’s reputation and warned of legal action if Abdullah did not withdraw his remarks. BJP Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed that Abdullah had accused to divert attention from his government’s “incompetence, inaction and misgovernance" in Jammu and Kashmir.
