An 82-year-old man in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district was left stunned after discovering that his bank account showed a balance of nearly Rs 759 crore when he visited a Common Service Centre (CSC) to withdraw his old-age pension on Sunday. His disabled son's account also reflected a similarly massive balance. The bizarre figures are suspected to be the result of a banking or technical glitch, though authorities are yet to give an explanation.
Read Full Story The incident came to light when Kameshwar Mishra, a poet, had gone to a CSC centre to withdraw his social security pension. His disabled son, a beneficiary of a disability pension scheme, accompanied him. After receiving the pension amount, Mishra decided to check his account balance. To his surprise, the account showed a balance of Rs 759,69,51,951 or nearly Rs 759 crore. His son's account also displayed a similarly enormous sum, taking the combined balance in the two accounts to over Rs 1,500 crore, according to the family.
The unexpected figures left both the family and the CSC operator shocked, and raised questions about a possible banking or technical glitch. Mishra said he could not understand how such a huge amount appeared in the accounts and urged the bank and the concerned authorities to investigate the matter. He said he had brought the issue to public attention so that officials could verify the balances and correct any error.
The exact reason behind the massive balances remains unclear. Initial indications suggest the figures may have resulted from a technical or banking system glitch, though no official explanation has been issued so far. A response from the bank is awaited. Ends (with inputs from Manibhushan Sharma)
