Tripura Chief Minister, Dr. Manik Saha, inaugurated the fourth major public hospital in Agartala on Sunday (July 12, 2026) to ease patient pressure and meet demand for a super specialty hospital in Tripura. The new facility has been named Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Agartala Civil Hospital. The Chief Minister said multidisciplinary health services have been provided through the development of infrastructure, installation of advanced technology, and specialist services. “It is a matter of great pride that our specialists have successfully performed kidney transplants,” he said.
The Chief Minister announced that the State Government has considerably increased the number of beds in hospitals to cope with pressure. The number of physicians and surgeons across departments has increased manifold. He announced that the Government has received proposals to set up new medical colleges even in interior areas. The proposals are being examined, but Bandhan Bank’s proposal to establish a medical college at Ambassa — headquarters of the tribal-dominated Dhalai district — has been cleared by the Cabinet.
Tripura presently has one government-run medical college and one dental college. There are also a society-run medical college and a private medical college. The Chief Minister said critical patients are being referred to hospitals within the State because of the advanced facilities. He said he has been consulting senior health department officials on liver and heart transplants. He regretted that doctors often face assault and harassment by aggrieved patients. He appealed for trust in doctors and health staff because they are devoted to their profession.
Saha said that the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Agartala Civil Hospital is equipped with the latest equipment, similar to a corporate hospital. The 50-bed hospital will also have OPD services during the evening.
