Andhra Pradesh is witnessing a sudden surge in daytime temperatures while rain remains elusive El Nino condition is playing a crucial According to the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), Doravarisatram area in Tirupati has recorded highest day’s temperature on Sunday at 4.30 p.m. at 41°C, while several stations in the State reported above 40°C. At 4 p.m., other stations such as Tanuku in West Godavari district sizzled at 40.9°C, while Throvagunta area of Ongole and Bonupalle in Tirupati district recorded 40.8°C, and Tenali in Guntur district reported 40.5°C. Many places in Visakhapatnam district recorded between 35°C and 39°C, while Vijayawada and Amaravati recorded 38.9°C and 38.4°C respectively.
While there has been no rainfall over the weekend, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, has issued heatwave alerts for several districts in the State, such as Bapatla, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, Guntur, Krishna, NTR, Palnadu, and West Godavari on Monday. Heatwaves and dry weather are likely in different parts of the State until July 15, the Met Department stated in a release. Deficit percent According to the DES, between June 1 and July 12, the State has received 86.2 mm as against the normal of 154 mm, registering an overall deficit of 44%.
Little to no rain in the coming week will only aggravate the situation, as already, 27 out of 28 districts in A.P. have reported deficient rainfall. As of July 12, except for Anantapur district that has reported normal rainfall, all other districts remain parched, with the districts of Annamayya, West Godavari and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema reporting large deficient rainfall. In these districts, the deficit percent range from 61%-65%. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema received only 77.1 mm as against the normal rainfall of 201.9 mm during the Southwest Monsoon so far. West Godavari received 68.7 mm downpour, with the normal being 196.6 mm during the period and Annamayya received 48.1 mm rainfall as against the normal of 118.1 mm.
The deficit rainfall in the districts of Tirupati, Chittoor, Visakhapatnam and YSR Kadapa is also increasing, and at present the percentage exceeds 50%. The State is likely to see overall below-normal monsoon this season, due to the likelihood of a very strong El Nino event this year.
