The Ripponpet police in Hosanagar have succeeded in tracing the parents of a newborn baby abandoned recently in the town. During the investigation, the police learnt that the mother had abandoned the baby as she was unmarried, and her family members were unwilling to accept the child. Last week, a newborn baby was found abandoned at a bus stop at Gavatur, near Ripponpet.
Residents noticed the baby and handed it over to the police, who placed the infant in the custody of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Shivamogga. The committee ensured that the baby received the necessary medical care. Meanwhile, the Ripponpet police registered a case under Section 93 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with the abandonment of a child under the age of 12 years by parents or caretakers.
The police succeeded in tracing the mother who had abandoned the baby, and recorded the statements of the couple. According to the police, the woman had kept her family in the dark about her pregnancy. They learnt of her relationship with the man only after she gave birth. When they objected and refused to accept the baby, she abandoned the infant at a bus stop.
The police said the mother had since expressed a wish to reclaim the baby, who remains in the custody of the CWC. She is currently out on bail.
